GRAND news: September 12 is Grandparents Day – a time to celebrate our parents’ parents!
Each United States President wants to be remembered for the good they do for our Country. Well, President Jimmy Carter made Grandparents Day a part of his legacy… and we LOVE this SPECIAL tribute!
Here’s the scoop: In 1969, a 9-year-old boy named Russell Capper wrote a letter to President Nixon asking for a special day to honor grandparents. It was a BRILLIANT idea! But sadly, his request was denied – The young man actually received a letter from Nixon’s Personal Secretary, Rose Mary Woods, with the explanation.
In 1970, Marian McQuade, who served on the West Virginia Commission of Aging and the Nursing Home Licensing Board, wrote letters to Senators, Governors, and Congressmen in all 50 states asking them to honor Grandparents Day. Her mission was clear – She wanted to educate kiddos about the important contributions that seniors made throughout history so they would not be forgotten. She also encouraged the youth to “adopt” a grandparent FOREVER! What a THOUGHTFUL woman!
GRAND news: McQuade’s hard work and dedication paid off!!
That’s right – She brought Capper’s idea to fruition! In three short years, 43 states were celebrating Grandparents Day. And, today, all 50 states celebrate this special day on the first Sunday of September (after Labor Day).
Hats off to you, McQuade… the official Founder of Grandparents Day!
